A Landmark Moment for Our Community
We are thrilled to announce that Hilal International Academy has officially been authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP).
For us, this milestone is more than a badge of academic prestige, it’s a collective triumph born of late-night curriculum meetings, intensive teacher training, strategic facility upgrades, and the unwavering support of our entire community.
Why IB DP Authorization Is So Significant
Somalia is home to thousands of schools, yet only a handful are authorized to offer the full IB Diploma Programme.
Zooming out to Sub-Saharan Africa, the number remains small—on par with countries like South Africa and Ghana.
Globally, while more than 5,900 schoolsoffer one or more IB programmes, relatively few are granted DP authorization each year—a reflection of the programme’s intentionally high standards.
What Is the IB Diploma Programme?
- Age Range: For students aged 16–19, over a two-year curriculum.
- Structure: Six subject groups + three core components:
- Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
- Extended Essay (EE)
- Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)
- Global Recognition: Accepted by 2,000+ universities worldwide, often with scholarships or advanced standing.
- Philosophy: Focused on intercultural understanding, critical thinking, and ethical leadership, beyond memorization.
What This Means for Our Students and Families
- Global Pathways: Students can apply directly to universities in the UK, US, Canada, Europe, Australia, and more—no foundation year needed.
- Academic Advantage: Studies show that IB DP graduates have stronger critical thinking skills and higher university retention rates.
- Excellence Benchmark: IB schools worldwide consistently surpass average global results—proving that excellence can thrive in any context.
- Real-World Readiness: The CAS component ensures every graduate completes community service projects, building character and a strong student résumé.
Common Questions
Q: Will the DP replace the national curriculum?
A: No. Students can still sit for national exams. However, we expect many will choose the IB pathway from Year 1 due to its global advantages.
Thank You, Hilal Family
Authorization is not a finish line—it’s a launch pad. As we welcome our first IB DP cohort in September, 2025, we invite parents, alumni, and supporters to be part of this journey:
mentor a CAS project, sponsor a scholarship, or simply cheer from the sidelines.
“IB classrooms don’t just teach students to understand the world—they empower them to change it. Together, we’ll make that vision a reality at Hilal International Academy.”
